Nigerian passport holders need a visa for the United States, and unlike most destinations the decision is made in a short in-person interview rather than on the paperwork. You complete the DS-160 form online, pay the fee, book an appointment at the consulate in Lagos or the embassy in Abuja, and attend. The interview appointment — not the processing afterwards — is what sets your timeline, and the wait for one is currently the long pole on this route.

What actually decides a United States application
The US is the destination where preparation changes the most, because the officer has only a few minutes and is forming a judgement about intent. Everything in the DS-160 is in front of them, and the questions are usually about the gaps and the contradictions in it. Business travel, family visits, medical treatment and conference attendance are all routine and all approvable; what sinks applications is an answer that does not match the form, or a purpose that shifts under questioning.
The DS-160 is the script for the interview
Officers question against what you wrote. An address, an employer or a travel history that differs between the form and your answers reads as inconsistency even when it was carelessness. Fill it in slowly, keep a copy, and re-read it before you go in.
Answer the question you were asked
The most common self-inflicted refusal we see is a rehearsed speech delivered over a simple question. Short, direct, truthful answers do better than a prepared narrative, and volunteering an unasked-for plan to stay longer is a category of mistake nobody recovers from in the same interview.
Existing travel history helps, and cannot be manufactured
A record of visiting other countries and returning on time genuinely supports an application. If you have none, that is not fatal, but it means the rest of your ties — employment, business, family, property — has to carry the argument on its own.

Check the current appointment availability before you plan anything around it, and do not commit to non-refundable travel until the visa is in the passport.
