UK visa requirements from Nigeria

Nigerian passport holders need a visa to enter the United Kingdom, and it must be issued before you fly — there is no visa on arrival and no transit exemption you can rely on at the border. You complete the application online, book a biometrics appointment at a VFS centre, and submit your supporting documents against it. A priority service exists and is markedly faster than the standard route.

Who needs a visa for United Kingdom?

By passport, for the nationalities we most often process. Where an answer is conditional it depends on the length of your stay, the purpose of the trip, or what other visas you already hold — tell us your situation and we will confirm it.

United Kingdom visa requirements: what you need

The document set we work to. Missions ask for additional items depending on the visa class and your circumstances, and we tell you which apply to you before anything is submitted.

  • International passport (10-year, machine-readable, current)
  • Online UK visa application + biometrics appointment at VFS
  • Recent passport photo meeting UK Home Office spec
  • Proof of funds — 6 months of bank statements
  • Confirmed travel and hotel reservation
  • Employment letter / business registration / school letter
  • Sponsor letter and sponsor's financial documents (if applicable)

What actually decides a United Kingdom application

The UK is the single most-requested destination on our visa desk, and it is also the one where a first application is most often refused. That is not because the requirements are secret — they are published — but because the standard visitor route is assessed on credibility as a whole rather than on a checklist. Family visits, business travel and university open days all go through the same door, and the file has to make sense as a story before it makes sense as a pile of paper.

The bank statements have to match the trip you describe

The commonest reason we send a file back before submission is a mismatch: an itinerary that costs more than the account plausibly supports, or a balance that appeared suddenly and cannot be accounted for. Six months of ordinary, consistent statements are far stronger than a single large deposit made a fortnight before applying.

Book the VFS appointment around your documents, not before them

Appointment slots in Lagos and Abuja get scarce ahead of the summer and December peaks, which tempts people to book first and assemble later. That gets the order wrong — a slot you cannot properly fill is worse than a slot two weeks later that you can.

If someone is sponsoring you, their file matters as much as yours

A sponsor in the UK needs to evidence their own status, income and accommodation, and the relationship needs to be visible rather than asserted. A supporting letter on its own carries very little weight without the documents behind it.

How Rayonner helps

UK refusal rates for first-time Nigerian applicants are high — Rayonner reviews the document set against current case-officer expectations before you book your VFS appointment.

In practice that means we check the document set against what the mission is currently asking for, flag what is missing or inconsistent before it is submitted rather than after it is refused, and book the flights and accommodation the application needs — as reservations, so you are not buying non-refundable travel against a decision you do not yet have. We are an IATA Accredited Travel Agent, so the ticketing and the visa file are handled by the same people.

This page is first-time guidance, not a legal source. The embassy, consulate or immigration authority for your destination is the only authority on its own requirements, and they can change without notice. Fees shown are what the government charges and are estimates — they are paid by you to the mission, and Rayonner's processing fee is separate and quoted before you commit. No agency, including this one, decides or can guarantee the outcome of a visa application.

United Kingdom visa: common questions

Do Nigerian passport holders need a visa for United Kingdom?

Yes. Nigerian passport holders need a visa for United Kingdom, and it must be arranged before you travel rather than on arrival.

How long does a United Kingdom visa take to process?

15–25 business days (standard); 5 business days priority. That is the published window rather than a promise — missions do move, and a file that comes back with a query starts the clock again. Work backwards from your travel date and leave margin.

How much does a United Kingdom visa cost?

The government charge is GBP 127 (standard visitor); GBP 500 priority. You pay that to the embassy or consulate directly. Rayonner's processing fee is separate from it and is quoted to you before you commit to anything.

Is the UK priority service worth paying for?

It is worth it when your travel date is fixed and close, and it buys you a decision faster — not a different decision. It does not improve your chances, and paying for priority on a file that is not ready simply gets you refused sooner. If the documents need another week, take the week.

Does a previous UK refusal ruin future applications?

No, but it must be declared, and an undeclared previous refusal is treated far more seriously than the refusal itself. Every subsequent application should address the specific reasons given in the refusal notice. Bring the notice with you — the wording of it determines what the next file has to prove.

Flights you will need for this trip

We book the travel and the visa together, so the dates on your application and the dates on your reservation are the same dates.

Travelling for study or business?

Those applications are assessed differently and need documents this page does not cover. We have written up each one separately.
