US F-1 student visa from Nigeria

An F-1 visa is applied for after a US school issues Form I-20. You pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160, and attend an interview at the embassy in Abuja or the consulate in Lagos. Unlike most applications, the decision is made in a short conversation rather than on paperwork alone — the documents support the interview, they do not replace it.

Typical processing

Interview slot dependent — currently 2–4 months in Lagos / Abuja

Government fee, estimated

USD 185 (B1/B2); USD 205 (work)

Paid to the mission, not to us

How this differs from a visitor application

US law presumes every applicant intends to immigrate, and the burden is on you to overcome that presumption. That single principle shapes everything: the officer is testing whether you are a genuine student with a reason to return, and they decide in minutes. Preparation for the conversation matters as much as the file, which is why interview practice is part of what our desk does rather than an extra.

What this application needs in addition

On top of the standard documents for United States, which are listed in full on the destination page.

Where these applications go wrong

These are the failures our desk sees most often on this route. None of them is about the applicant being unqualified — they are all preparation.

The applicant cannot explain the funding

Being unable to say clearly who is paying, what they do, and why they are paying is a refusal in itself — regardless of whether the bank statement is strong.

The course choice does not add up

An officer asks why this school and this course. An answer that does not connect to your background or your plans reads as a visa route rather than an education.

Rehearsed answers

Memorised responses are recognisable and counterproductive. The preparation that works is knowing your own file well enough to answer naturally.

Not sure how strong your file is?

The free assessment takes about a minute and tells you what a consulate is likely to take issue with — and what would fix it — before you pay a government fee.

Questions people ask

How early can I apply?

You can normally be interviewed several months before your programme start, and you may enter the US within a set window before it. Appointment waits in Nigeria move, so early is better.

Can I work on an F-1?

On-campus work is generally permitted within limits, and certain training options exist later in a programme. Off-campus work without authorisation ends the status, so this is not something to improvise.

What happens if I am refused?

You are told the section of law relied on, most often the one about non-immigrant intent. You can reapply, but only a materially changed situation or a better-presented case is worth reapplying with.

Travelling to United States for another reason?

This page is first-time guidance, not a legal source. The embassy, consulate or immigration authority for your destination is the only authority on its own requirements, and they can change without notice. Fees shown are what the government charges and are estimates — they are paid by you to the mission, and Rayonner's processing fee is separate and quoted before you commit. No agency, including this one, decides or can guarantee the outcome of a visa application.
