What flying Lagos to London actually looks like

Lagos to London is the busiest long-haul route out of Nigeria, and it is also the one where the price gap between options is widest. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have long flown Murtala Muhammed to Heathrow without a stop, and when you need to arrive fresh for a morning meeting that is what you want. But on almost every date we search, the cheapest fares on the board are one-stop itineraries, and the saving is rarely small.

The connecting carriers route you through their own hub — Doha, Istanbul, Casablanca, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Cairo, Amsterdam or Paris — and the total journey is usually somewhere between ten and eighteen hours depending on how long you sit in the middle. That is the real trade-off on this route: a few hours of your day against a materially lower fare. We will show you both and let you decide rather than quietly sorting you into one.

Around 6h 30m in the air on a nonstop service. Connecting fares — which are usually the cheapest — run from about 9h 45m upward, via a single Middle Eastern, North African or European hub.

Before you book Lagos to London

You will need a UK visa before you fly

Nigerian passport holders need a visa for the United Kingdom, and it must be issued before departure — there is no visa on arrival. Applications are biometric and appointment slots in Lagos and Abuja get booked out well ahead of the summer and December peaks. Our visa desk prepares and checks the file before it goes in.

Heathrow is not the only London airport

Heathrow (LHR) is the main gateway and where the nonstops land, but Gatwick (LGW) sometimes prices lower on connecting itineraries. If your final destination is south or east of the city, ask us — the cheaper airport is not always the cheaper journey once you add the transfer.

Book earlier for December and August

Fares on this route move sharply around the Nigerian holiday travel peaks. December departures and the July–August school break are consistently the dearest weeks of the year, and they are also when award and cheap-bucket seats disappear first.
