Which consulate you apply to is a decision, not a formality. Where the trip covers several countries, the main destination is the one where you spend the most time, and applying to the wrong mission can mean rejection without assessment. Appointment availability differs sharply between consulates, which is a practical consideration our desk weighs when advising where to file.

Filing at the wrong consulate
The main destination governs where you apply. An itinerary that does not clearly establish it, or an application filed at a more convenient mission, can be rejected before assessment.
Insurance that does not meet the threshold
Schengen requires a minimum level of medical cover for the whole stay. A general travel policy that falls short is a routine refusal reason and an avoidable one.
Booking flights before the visa
A reservation is required, but paying for non-refundable travel before a decision converts a refusal into a financial loss as well.

Yes — a short-stay Schengen visa admits you to all the countries in the area, subject to the entries and days granted. What it does not do is let you choose any consulate to apply at.
Can I add tourism to a business trip?
Short-stay covers both. The application should describe the trip honestly, including any leisure days, rather than presenting one purpose and travelling for another.
