Study visa · from Nigeria
Ireland student visa from Nigeria
An Irish study visa is applied for online after an approved institution accepts you onto a course on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes. Ireland expects tuition to be paid, or substantially paid, before the visa is decided, and expects evidence that you can support yourself for the year without working.
Typical processing
20–40 business days
Government fee, estimated
EUR 60 (short-stay single); EUR 100 multiple
Paid to the mission, not to us
How this differs from a visitor application
Ireland asks for tuition up front more firmly than most comparable destinations, which changes the order of the process — money moves before the visa is granted, so the refund position of your institution matters. Ireland also requires private medical insurance at application rather than on arrival.
What this application needs in addition
On top of the standard documents for Ireland, which are listed in full on the destination page.
- ✓Letter of acceptance for a course on the eligible programmes list
- ✓Evidence that tuition has been paid to the institution
- ✓Proof of maintenance funds available for the academic year
- ✓Private medical insurance covering the period of study
- ✓Academic history and English language evidence
- ✓A written statement explaining the course choice and your intentions afterwards
Where these applications go wrong
These are the failures our desk sees most often on this route. None of them is about the applicant being unqualified — they are all preparation.
Paying tuition to an unlisted programme
Only courses on the eligible list support a study visa. Money paid to a programme that is not listed is money at risk before the application is even assessed.
Maintenance funds counted twice
The tuition already paid does not count towards the maintenance figure. Applicants frequently present one balance as evidence of both.
Not sure how strong your file is?
The free assessment takes about a minute and tells you what a consulate is likely to take issue with — and what would fix it — before you pay a government fee.
Questions people ask
Can I work while studying in Ireland?
Students on eligible programmes generally have limited permission to work, but the visa is assessed on the basis that you do not need to. Presenting work income as your maintenance plan weakens the application.
Is Ireland part of the Schengen area?
No. An Irish visa does not admit you to the Schengen countries, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to Ireland. Trips that cover both need both.
This page is first-time guidance, not a legal source. The embassy, consulate or immigration authority for your destination is the only authority on its own requirements, and they can change without notice. Fees shown are what the government charges and are estimates — they are paid by you to the mission, and Rayonner's processing fee is separate and quoted before you commit. No agency, including this one, decides or can guarantee the outcome of a visa application.
