What flying Lagos to Johannesburg actually looks like

This is one of the few long routes out of Lagos where the nonstop is genuinely competitive rather than a premium you pay for convenience. South African Airways flies Murtala Muhammed to O. R. Tambo directly in a little under six hours, and on many dates it sits close to the connecting fares rather than far above them.

Where it does not, the alternatives route through Nairobi, Kigali, Addis Ababa or Dar es Salaam and add somewhere between three and eight hours. Johannesburg is also the natural gateway for onward travel into Cape Town, Durban and the wider region, so it is worth telling us the final destination up front — a through fare is frequently cheaper than a Lagos–Johannesburg ticket plus a separate domestic one.

Before you book Lagos to Johannesburg

South Africa requires a visa in advance

Nigerian passport holders need a visa to enter South Africa, applied for before travel. Processing times vary through the year and are longest around the December period, so build the lead time into your plan.

Ask about the through fare to Cape Town or Durban

If Johannesburg is a connection rather than your destination, a single ticket all the way through usually prices better than two separate ones — and it protects you if the first leg runs late.

Yellow fever certificate

Travellers arriving from Nigeria are routinely asked for a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Carry the card; it is checked on this corridor more often than on most.
